The Duke

Our client came to us with a coloring book in hope of “just putting a frame around it, but could we see both sides?”. After we discussed a couple of different options we had regrettable decided to just but a frame around it. We all wanted to create something more but were at deadlock on how to proceed. We happen to be hosting a local artist who was also teaching classes on each Saturday of the month. She is well versed in a multitude of art mediums, including stain glass. That is were the idea for a stain glass mat came in, one day I looked up and the little light just came on. The stain glass would let the coloring book be displayed as art and also allow us to protect the coloring book at the same time.  With each picture I will try and walk you through the process.

We contacted a local stained glass artist, explained what we
wanted, and she created it. Shown here are the stained glass,
coloring book, and frame.

The clear glass in the center is UV protective and we asked the stained glass artist to add some solder to the outside edge of the UV glass in order to create a shelf for the coloring book to sit on. There was no need to mount with an adhesive.

This picture shows the back side of the coloring book.
We covered the back with UV glass, which was the same
size as the stained glass.

This picture shows the layers involved. The 1st layer is uv glass which is the front. The 2nd Layer is the stain glass and coloring book.(which has uv glass) The 3rd layer is uv glass also.

When finishing a stained glass frame, 3 legs are nailed together, all the pieces are inserted, and
the 4th leg is nailed into place. We left the frame a natural color with just a clear finish.
Project completed.
